Homeopathy for Headaches
Willa Keizer, CCH, Certified Classical Homeopath

Many of us suffer from occasional headaches. These headaches may function as a barometer indicating the level of stress that we are under. They may be brought on by a variety of causes such as emotional difficulties, skipping meals, getting too hot or cold, bad posture, or lack of sleep. Fluctuating hormonal levels can also play a role in women’s headaches and may be related to the menstrual period or menopause.

There are two major types of headaches: vascular headaches and tension headaches. Vascular headaches include migraine and cluster headaches. These are caused by the blood vessels in the head and brain constricting and then widening. The homeopathic remedies listed in this article can be useful for temporary relief of migraine or cluster headaches. Many people have experienced permanent or long- term relief of these headaches following constitutional treatment by a qualified homeopath.

Tension headaches are usually caused by the contraction of muscles in the upper back neck, and scalp. The first thing to do if you are experiencing this type of headache is to identify the brought it on- and then remedy it. Making up that missed meal, taking a nap or a soothing warm bath may be all you need to rid yourself of a tension headache. Relaxation exercises, deep breathing, or meditation can also be very useful in helping those muscles to relax and let go. If you frequently respond to stress in this way, homeopathic constitutional treatment may be the answer.

If simple measures have not done the job, you may wish to try one of the homeopathic remedies that are known to help with headaches. These remedies are for temporary relief only. Treatment by a competent classical homeopath is best as constitutional treatment can keep them from returning if you get headaches regularly.

  • Belladonna is a remedy that has been known to help people who have headaches with much pounding and throbbing. The pain may appear suddenly, and may be accompanied by a flushed or hot face and cold hands or feet. There can be a great sensitivity to light, noise or being jarred.

  • Bryonia has proven useful with headaches that are greatly aggravated by any type of motion. Even just moving the eyeballs may bring on the pain. Firm pressure may relieve somewhat. There is often irritability with this type of headache, and a desire to be left alone. Constipation or other digestive problems may accompany the headache.

  • Nux Vomica is a great remedy for headaches brought on by overeating, drinking, working too hard, or staying up late. It is often the remedy of choice for a hangover. There may be an overall sick feeling, queasy stomach, chilliness, and irritability.

  • Iris Versicolor is known to help relieve headaches, especially migraines, that are proceeded by visual disturbances or nausea and vomiting. The headache is even worse after vomiting, and it may come on at regular intervals, such as every weekend.

  • Lachesis headaches are often left-sided, with a bursting pain as if all the blood was in the head. Women may get this type of headache if their period is due or late. The headache may go away when the flow starts. The person may wake up with the headache and may feel aggravated by slight touch or tight clothing.

  • Natrum muriaticum is a major remedy for migraine headaches. The pain may feel like a thousand little hammers knocking on the brain, and may be worse at 10 AM or 3 PM. The person may also feel dry and thirsty with the headache.

Any headache that is accompanied by a stiff neck and high fever, or is unusually severe or prolonged should be checked out by a medical practitioner. Headaches such as these can be indicators of more serious conditions that may require immediate medical treatment.
